Shigellosis
Sunday, March 8th, 2009Shigellosis or bacillary dysentery is a food borne disease caused due to the bacterium Shigella. The illness can manifest itself into a very serious form and can result in the loss of vital fluids from the body of a person. Shigellosis hardly ever occurs in animals and is a disease that affects humans along with other primates like monkeys and chimpanzees. The causal bacteria are normally found in water that is polluted with human feces. The fecal-oral route is the path of transmission in the case of Shigellosis. The common approach of the spread of the disease is person-to-person or hand-to-mouth. This disease is typically seen in areas of poor hygiene and is common amongst children. The treatment for this disease requires a replacement of fluids and salts that the body loses due to dysentery. In most cases, the disease can be cured within four to eight weeks without the need of antibiotics
